Welcome to Starlite :-)
Pleasure meeting new people and some old faces (I would have to say I'm an old face, I've been kicking around on and off since 2004)
So welcome :-)
Write and be read,
Comment and be heard.

Tinyteddy , I do see your point. You've opened my eyes so that I think I know what I have *not* been doing right. I have been rather lax when it comes to leaving my *own* comments on peoples' poems. Most of the time, I just post my works and log off, due to having a very hectic work schedule in real life. But, starting today, I am going to take some real quality time out to post some honest comments on *all* of the poems and stories that I've been meaning to, but up till now have not. That way... folks here in the Starlite community won't mind commenting on my works in turn. - Farewell for now!

It's an excellent site indeed! Nice poetry, and nice people too.
Although... there are some sad times when it seems that comments are scarce one way or the other. Some days, I do tend to write like four or five poems (the limit) in one day. Not counting days when I post my short stories! Maybe *one* out of five of my posted works will get a comment. I love to write, and enjoy folks telling me what they think of my works... but it is typical to recieve fewer comments rather than many. Sometimes even none.

It can occasionally feel very frustrating when you work a long time on a poem or a story and for all you know it goes somewhat unnoticed. I'm not writing for any sort of fame (I'm not the Lady Gaga of Poetry or anything), just for the love of it... but I wouldn't mind those who enjoy my works being a little *tiny* bit more vocal about it. Know what I mean? I have noticed a bit of a pattern, though: love poems or love-related poems seem to gain the best responses. The only thing is: my writings are far more diverse than that, covering the whole spectrum from science fiction and fantasy all the way to things like gothic horror and fairy tales, and even stuff based on religion, mythology... you name it, really. The sky is the limit, with me! But I get the impression that my best works are being overlooked in favor of just the love-themed stuff. And so, I have begun to wonder... are there many fans of more diverse things on this site, or is it *mostly* just fans of love poetry in general? A good question, for those of us who might not want to limit themselves to one genre. (Especially me; I love to think "outside the box" poetically and literary-wise!)

Greetings, Babygirl and Crazyguy, and welcome to our wild and crazy site! Hey... I love both of your names. They sound very, very much like an excellent superhero team. Sort of like Hit-Girl and Big Daddy from that Kick-A** movie. But unto more serious, and perhaps more on-topic things! Crazyguy, if you'd like to improve your skills, I can give you some advice from my own personal experiences. You might be interested in this too, Babygirl, since it can apply to anyone...

If you are new to writing, or even if you have always been a writer at heart, or even in fact, a little advice can always go a long way. I'll tell you guys (and gals) the best advice for writing I could ever give anyone, based on how I go about it. I've been writing virtually since childhood, some of it good and some of it not so hot! In recent years, I've published extensively on the Internet and have something of a fanbase in Germany, or so one of my German friends told me once. So, as a sort of Veteren writer whose been in the game for a while, this is my honest and truthful opinion to all newcomers. I hope it will prove useful to both of you. Here goes...

1. Explore your feelings, and mix in your own experiences. People can always tell real, true emotions from contrived plot devices any day. In most of my poetry and short stories, I always mix in my own point of view and things I have done, and places I have been, with the story I am trying to tell. Sometimes I even make a kind of appearance in the work, in some form or another. It adds to the realism of the work. Just don't overdo the realism when you are trying to tell a good story, since fantasy is always more fascinating to people than reality. The best fiction is a balance between the real and the fantastic. This creates a surreal and interesting pseudo-reality to base your works in.

2. Be passionate about your creation. If you feel passionate about something, that gives you an inner fire. If you are writing about things you feel passionate about, your creative flame will burn brightly, for all to see. You have to care about your characters and their fates in order to tell their story. In poetry, it is an easier thing to manage than in short stories... but the principle is the same: write about what you feel passionate about. Without this burning sense of life and liveliness, a poem is just like any other, and perhaps even unremarkable. Passion gives a writer the edge to make any poem or story into a truly artistic masterpiece.

3. Don't worry what people think. My works have run the full spectrum from being entertaining to being horrifying, depending on what I wrote. But at all times, I feel I was true to me and what my message was at the time. Like the old saying goes: "You cannot please all of the people, all of the time." But, if at the end of the day you feel you were true to your particular vision, then that is a job well done. You will have your own fans if you are dedicated... sooner or later. So don't give up if some folks just don't like what you have to say, because it is worth your efforts, even if just for the few who care. You will get accolades and praise as much as you will get complaints and negativity. It goes with the territory. Be kind, and always let your fans know you appreciate them... since they make your works worthwhile and your heart feel good. But don't get angry at your detractors just for not liking your work. There are many differing kinds of taste in this world, and if you are dedicated and persistent you will find your fans and they will find you. It's all a matter of people being attracted to what their taste tells them is good and in life there is ever something for everyone.

4. Lastly, and perhaps most importantly: Do not give up. Writing takes practice, and the best way to practice is by doing. Learn as you go, and don't be afraid to take big chances. The best works are often the most experimental in nature. My own works are often experimental, sometimes controversial, but always a learning experience for me. I'm not always good, but I never consider myself bad since it is all part of the creative process. Stick to a poem or a story until it is complete, then share it with the world. Sometimes that takes a big leap of faith and courage. A lot of times, I wrote a work that I was almost afraid to share because it was just so different... but in the end, I got up the courage needed and shared it. Because had I not, I would have always wondered if I should have. Courage is as much a part of being a writer as in any performance art form. "All the world is but a stage, and we are all but actors and actresses upon it." as the Bard once said, and very rightly. We cannot afford to let stagefright cut the performance short, so to speak. So take a chance and see how things turn out. You may be pleasantly surprised, in the end.

Again I say: welcome to the site! I hope my bit of advice helps you to be even better at your art than you were before. - Farewell for now, and may your works do as well as your dreams!
