Welcome back to the...

The FOS Best of/Worst of Year 3 Top Ten!

We're still counting down the best and worst of the last year, in terms of popularity, Before we get started on the forms for the week, I have a change of scedule to annouce. Due to life's little intrusions, this week's forms were late being posted so this challenge will continue until July 31st when the countdown will continue with Week #3. Thank you all for your patience and understanding.

So now let's jump right in and have fun!

Top Ten Worst - #4

Rhupunt

The rhupunt is created by writing two lines of 3, 4, or 5 sections each - the poet's choice, but I do believe that the pattern should be followed throughout the poem. Each section has 4 syllables, so each line will have 12, 16, or 20 syllables - making for long lines. These lines can be split, however, as I'll explain below. The rhyme scheme is split within each section. The best illustration is below. The x's represent syllables and the a, b, c etc. are rhymes. As you'll see this contains both inner rhymes and end rhymes.

xxxaxxxa[xxxa][xxxa]xxxB
xxxaxxxa[xxxa][xxxa]xxxB

The brackets represent the two "optional" sections. Further "couplets" in the form would follow the pattern as such:

xxxcxxxc[xxxc][xxxc]xxxD
xxxcxxxc[xxxc][xxxc]xxxD

As I mentioned the form can also be split so that each line is effectively a stanza, as follows:

xxxa
xxxa
xxxa
xxxa
xxxB

xxxa
xxxa
xxxa
xxxa
xxxB

I think this form should be easy once the pattern is established, and should make for some great reading this week!

Example:

We all must try the form that I have presented
for when we die the lines we write are thus minted

Top Ten Best - #4

Trois-par-huit

The Trois-par-Huit was created by Lorraine M. Kanter. This is a poem containing two tercets (3-line stanza) followed by a couplet (2-line stanza), or you can break it up into tercet, couplet, and tercet. Therefore, there are 8 lines total. The syllable count is 3, 6, 9, 12, 12, 9, 6, 3 (multiples of three). The rhyming pattern is AAB BBC CC where the last line is the title of the poem and summarizes the meaning of the poem. I do not know for certain, but believe that the rhyme scheme would not change if you split the stanzas AAB BB CCC.

*Note: These poems are to appear center aligned.

Form illustrated: (x’s are syllables, capital letters are rhymes)

xxA
xxxxxA
xxxxxxxxB

xxxxxxxxxxxB
xxxxxxxxxxxB
xxxxxxxxC

xxxxxC
xxC

- OR -

xxA
xxxxxA
xxxxxxxxB

xxxxxxxxxxxB
xxxxxxxxxxxB

XxxxxxxxC
xxxxxC
xxC

Again thank you for understanding the delay in posting this.. now let's see what we can do with these two lovely forms!
