This has been a stellar week for the Form Over Substance challenge – or now I should say challenges! We’ve had over 100 entries in the Once Upon a Haiku challenge, good participation in the Just This Nonce challenge, while still maintaining a loyal following in the original Form Over Substance challenge. As this week draws to a close, we want to thank everyone involved in making this possible. Namely – you! The FOS participant! Without you, this week would have never been possible, and these new challenges would have never made it off the ground. Without your support, we would not do what we do, which it to try to keep this forum and this website and community valid and important in your lives, and in ours! Ours is the greatest reward of all, to be able to share with you! We’d also like to thank Albert for his support with the new challenges and with everything Starlite related – without him, none of this would have ever been possible! With that said, we’re opening up this general discussion area in the FOS arena, for any comments, feedback, suggestions, etc. you may have for enhancing the FOS experience! We hope to continue this success and the joy of writing and sharing our love of good poetry, whatever form it takes! Your FOS guides, Michael Myrna Renee

Hi Michael, can I just ask what the meaning is of a "nonce" form? |

Since the Master of FOS is out of touch for today...I will attempt to address this and he can then confirm or deny tomorrow. The dictionary defines Nonce as: The present or particular occasion: a momentary form. In poetry, "nonce" is a word for a rhyme scheme composed for and perhaps used on just one occasion. For example, a 14-line poem that rhymes "abcdefggfedc ba" or "abbbbbbb bbbbba," rather than the traditional sonnet rhyme schemes of "abbaabba cdecde" (the Italian sonnet), "ababcdcdefef gg" (the English or Shakespearean sonnet) or "ababbcbccdcd ee" (the Spenserian sonnet) is a nonce sonnet, because it varies wildly from the standard form. A nonce form is one designed by a writer through his own creative purpose. If his nonce catches on, it may find itself no longer a nonce, but a grand form used by many. I hope this explanation helps. I am sure Michael will weigh in later.

Paul and others, Renee has explained the concept of the nonce form far better than I ever could! She is correct - a nonce form typically is a form created by a writer that is not a traditional, established form. It may be used just once or may become that writer's "style", as it were. Thanks so much, Renee, for posting that excellent definition, and thanks Paul for the question - I'm sure you're not the only one out there wondering what it meant! Yes, please excuse the mess this weekend as we prepare to bring you three new FOS challenges, starting on Monday of next week. These challenges will be: The Quatrain Chain Challenge - a competitive challenge in which each week the host gives a form of quatrain (4-line stanza/verse) to be used. The host will then provide a quatrain that must be included in the poem of the entries. The host picks the winner from the official entries. The Anything Goes Challenge - a competitive challenge in which the host gives a phrase to be used in your poem, and you can write the poem in any poetry form you wish, but you must tell what form you're using. Host picks winner from official entries. The Pantoum Kingdom - now THIS is my pet project, you might say. Many of you know I've been called many times "The Pantoum King." Well, the "King" wants to invite you to his kingdom. I'll start this chain off with an opening quatrain, and each person would then continue the pantoum, without end, eventually hopefully forming the world's longest pantoum! Can we build it? Yes we can! You may also have noticed a change in the name of the Just This Nonce Challenge to Your Choice to Nonce or Not Challenge, or the "NoncerNot" challenge. This is simply to re-emphasize that you do not HAVE to have your own nonce form to win, but you can use a form from FOS's archives. I hope these changes will bring new excitement to the FOS arena, and give you all more chances to enter, win, and grow as poets. Look for these new challenges starting next week! No stomping here here in FOS...this is a fun place where the rights and ideas of all count.......the dragon has decreed that as such........I am sure the Dragon will give the limerick idea complete consideration....And if feasible to do it and keep it "clean" I am very sure a Limerick chain will be created...... |

Coming Attractions! Based upon the success of the haiku and pantoum chains, coming soon we'll be adding a limerick chain (to calm the restless natives) and a rhyming chain, or Rhyming Train. The limerick chain was suggested by Maria, among others, and I thank her for the idea. The Rhyming Train is inspired by the one recently done by AlleyKat. Final details are being ironed out, just wanted you all to know. Thanks! A word on awards... I've been very busy the past week, and will be for some weeks to come. During that time, either Renee or Myrna will be hosting FOS - depending upon who is the host for the original Form Over Substance Challenge for the week, please email any questions you have to them. As to the awards for the challenges - the Bronze Yardstick, the Blank Parchment Award, and the Draconian Pen - if either Renee or Myrna do not send them out, I will follow up and send them to you upon my return full time to hosting. I'm sorry for the delay. Michael If you can't be kind, at least have the decency to be vague. *** I like to mingle wisdom with absurdity, for isn't the idea of being wise the most absurd?

Thanks so much Michael! We just got power and phone back on and it's 7:22 PM. Thanks for posting this. Apperntly the tornado touched down North of here 2 miles. We had large trees...100 years old down all over our little town, windows blown out of the court house. I don't know of any one who was hurt or not, but I sure don't hope there was. I am just glad I rememberd your email address was short enough to put in my husbands cell phone! BIG hugs to you my friend!! Dear Starlite family, I come to you tonight with very grave news about our beloved Albert. Albert's cancer is at stage four. It has spread to many other parts of his body. They think it has even spread to his liver, but he will need more tests to be sure. It is inoperable. They can not remove the cancer from his lungs and other organs. They will try chemo in a couple of weeks to try to buy us a little more time. He has been told he has a couple of months to a couple of years. He will be seeking a second opinion, of course, but he has already seen some of the best doctors in the USA. Albert wants to be very very open about all of this with all of you. He is hoping that sharing all of what he is going through may help another going through something similar. I am so sorry to have to bring such harsh news. As I told Albert on the phone tonight, there is always hope. Tonight we cry, tomorrow we try our best to handle what God has given us. I ask you all to pray for Albert and his family. Also pray for his girl friend Nanci. She is with him now and he says she has been a god send. Pray for me, too. As you know, Albert is a brother to me. We love you all. Tess |

Have you posted a new poem in the last week? Have you noticed the new message placed there? If not...it is pasted at the end of this post....I think it is self explanatory......and I do know not everyone is in a position to send a large donation to help out the cafe, but If you are able to donate...please do so... Albert needs us all more than ever before.... The message posted by Albert is as follows...it is on the confirmation page that appears when you have posted your poem: I have deliberatley left a small part of the message out, but when you post your ppoem you will see what i have posted it the most important part of the message from Albert. I Need Your Help! Please don't stop commenting on our poetry. Due to the circumstances of my new illness, I am unable to work as much as I have in the past. The Cafe has never been in more need of your help. Send us a few dollars if you can. (A few dollars goes a long way). Thank you so much for those who have already given their support. If you do not like to use credit cards, I will be happy to give you an address to mail in your donation.

I hope that everyone will notice this and take part. This was recently posted in the General Discussion area by Renee, but I want to help get the word out: I so rarely come here with my heart in my hand, but this is one time I am going to make an appeal to all. The following was taken from a local newspaper article about a child named Shane Bernier. Shane has leukemia and is 7 years old. He will be turning 8 on May 30th. In all likelihood, Shane will not see his 9th birthday. Shane is trying to get in the Guinness world book of records by receiving the most birthday cards ever. His parents do not want to receive any cards after May 30th. He is now receiving, and opening, about 2000 cards per day from friends all over the world. For 51 cents you can make a child smile.....Sounds like a Kiwanis thing to do! If you would like to send Shane a birthday card please send to the address below Master Shane Bernier Box 484 Lancaster, Ontario E0C 1N0 Thank you all! Lewis - Not being familiar with the poem, and not having access to Youtube right now, I'm flying a bit blind here. If the lines are iambic pentameter with alternating rhyme, as it seems they are from your description, it could be a number of forms, including a sonnet if the verse is part of a larger work. If you have the whole text you can post for us to analyze, I'd be glad to! Anyone else familiar with this? Any ideas?
