An English rendering of the Hindi translation of couplets of Sant Dadu Dayal, the medieval-age Sant from Rajasthan, India by Maharshi Mehi Paramhans ji Maharaj (1885-1986), taken from the latter's book "Santwaani Sateek" (Commentary on Sayings of Sants). -English Translation by Pravesh K. Singh "Niraadhaar Nij Dekhiye, Nainahu laagaa band. Tanh man khelai peev saun, Dadu sadaa anand." ||1|| [Closing your eyes look at (fix your gaze at) what is without a support or base (i.e. the "drishti-Bindu", the Point within, or the third eye). There the mind plays with the Lord (the 'anoraneeyaam', the tinier-than-the-tiniest form form of God).] "Nainahu aage dekhiye, Aatam antar soi. Tej punj sab bhari rahyaa, jhilmil jhilmil hoi." ||2|| [Look within yourself in the front of the eye. The whole expanse or realm inside is replete with the refulgence of the Divine Light which keeps on sparkling.] "Anahad baaje baajiye, amaraapuree niwaas. Joti saroopee jagamagai, koi nirakhai nij daas." ||3|| [Myriads of sounds are heard; the listener of these gets place in the Kingdom of Immortality (place beyond the reach of death). A genuine servant gets to see the resplendent form of the Supreme Being.] "Shabad anaahad ham sunyaa, nakh shikh sakal sareer. Sab ghati hari-hari hot hai, sahajai hee man theer." ||4|| [I have listened to the Quintessential Unstruck Melody, the Sound that's reverberating through the entire body from top to toe. Listening to this Sound, the mind spontaneously gets stilled.] "Shabadain shabad samaaile, par aatam so praan. Yahu man man so baandhi le, chittain chitta sujaan." ||5|| [Permeate yourself into the Sound through the Sound. Connect your 'praana' to the God. Connect your (microcosmic) mind to the (macrocosmic) mind. O Learned Being! Merge your chitta (consciousness) in to the pure consciousness.] "Drishtai drishti samaaile, suratain surat samaai. Samajhain samajhi samaaile, lai so lai le aai." ||6|| [Merge your sight into the sight, merge your surat-with-mind into the surat-without-mind. Merge your intellectual knowledge into the Self-Realisation. Merge yourself completely, losing your self into meditation] "Jog samaadhi sukh surati saun, sahajai sahajai aav. Muktaa dwaaraa mahal kaa, ihai bhagati kaa bhaav" ||7|| [The bliss of intense meditation, the ecstasy of trance comes about slowly. The spirit of the bhakti (devotion) is only aimed at getting the door to the Palace of Salvation.] "Sahaj sunni man raakhiye, in dunyoon ke maahi. Lay samaadhi ras peejiye, tahaan kaal bhay naahi.||8|| [Keep your attention in the natural void between these two (the two yogic nerves named 'idaa' and 'pingdaa'). There relish the blissful taste of 'laya-samaadhi' (trance or intense meditation, mind getting completely detached from the outside world; there is no fear of death there).] "Sunnahi maarag aaiyaa, sunnahi maarag jaai. Chetan penraa surat ka; Daadu rahu lyau laai."||9|| [Surat (current of consciousness) has come by the way of void, and will also exit by the way of void. The way to that current (of Light and Sound) lies in the void; Dadu exhorts to lay one's focussed attention there only (in that void)] "Surat samaai sanamukh rahai, jugi jugi jan pooraa. Daadu pyaasaa prem kaa, ras peevai soora."||10|| [That devote whose surat stays fixed in the front (in the inner sky), reverting from the outside world, is complete or perfect, in all the aeons. This blissful (juice) of bhakti is sipped only by the brave who is thirsty for love (of God).] "Dadu ulati apoothaa aap me, antari sodhi sujaan. So dhig teree baavare, taji baahar kee baan.||11|| [Dadu advises those who are not mature in practice (of meditation) to try and invert themselves. O wise ones! Search for your inner Self. O crazy (outwardly oriented) people! That Lord is with (within) you. Shun the habit of looking for Him without.] the translation is a bit wieldy...but try reading the poem pronouncing the original...it is beautiful...

Instill in me abundantly that fragrance, O Mother Earth, which emanates from you and from your plants and waters, that sweet perfume that all celestial beings are wont to emit, and let no enemy ever wish us ill! -Rig Veda “Religions are many and diverse, but reason and goodness are one” - Elbert Hubbard

Although the limitations of the world disappear for one who knows the Self, they are not destroyed, because they continue to exist for others. -The Yoga Sutras of Patanjali, 2:22 "Do we actually value religious diversity, or have we determined, because of our history, to endorse a particular religious tradition to the exclusion of others?"

Even as the sun shines and fills all space With light, above, below, across, so shines The Lord of Love and fills the hearts of all created beings. From him the cosmos comes, he who teaches Each living creature to attain perfection According to its own nature. He is The Lord of Love who reigns over all life. -Shvetashvatara Upanishad "Do we actually value religious diversity, or have we determined, because of our history, to endorse a particular religious tradition to the exclusion of others?"

First I gave up action, Then idle words, And lastly thought itself. Now I am here. Ridding my mind of distraction, Single-pointed, I shut out sounds and all the senses, And I am here. -Ashtavakra Gita 12:1-2 "Do we actually value religious diversity, or have we determined, because of our history, to endorse a particular religious tradition to the exclusion of others?"

As great as the infinite space beyond is the space within the lotus of the heart. Both heaven and earth are contained in that inner space, both fire and air, sun and moon, lightning and stars. Whether we know it in this world or know it not, everything is contained in that inner space. -Chandogya Upanishad Dedicate yourself to the Lord of Life, Who is the cause of the cosmos. He will Remove the cause of all your suffering And free you from the bondage of karma. -Shvetashvatara Upanishad Even as rock remains rock, carved or uncarved, consciousness remains consciousness whether the world appears or not. The world-appearance is but an empty expression; its substance is nothing but consciousness. In fact, even these manifestations and modifications are but Brahman, the cosmic consciousness—though not in the sense of manifestation or modification. Even this distinction—modification in the sense of modification, or any other sense—is meaningless in Brahman. When such expressions are used in relation to Brahman, the meaning is quite different, like water in the mirage. -From the Yoga Vasishtha But he who is truly wise Always sees the absolute Self. Celebrated, he is not delighted. Spurned, he is not angry. Pure of heart, He watches his own actions As if they were another's. How can praise or blame disturb him? -Ashtavakra Gita 3:9-10 Hidden in the cave of the heart, Leave pain and pleasure far behind. Those who know they are neither body nor mind But the immemorial Self, the divine Principle of existence, find the source Of all joy and live in joy abiding. I see the gates of joy are opening For your Nachiketa. -Katha Upanishad As there can be no water without the sea, No touch without the skin, no smell without The nose, no taste without the tongue, no form Without the eye, no sound without the Ear, no thought without the mind, no wisdom Without the heart, no work without hands, no Walking without feet, no scriptures without the Word, so there can be nothing without the Self. -Brihadaranyaka Upanishad A man who is advancing (spiritually) will begin to enjoy the deeper beatitude whether he is at work or not. While his hands are in society, he keeps his head cool in solitude. -Ramana Maharshi
