THOSE ARE WORDS OF WISDOM WENDY:-):-):-)
what people view as moral and ethical may differ but the bottom line is that they need to be "what is not harmful to the self or others".
Even if someone doesn't believe in God and/or the Bible, it is a good guidepost.

I'm in agreement with Michael. Even the most avid athiests express a sense of fairness and justice. And without some consistant standard how could such have any meaning.
It is like trying to measure the length of something without having consistant units of linear measure like inches or meters.

On the subject i believe there are absolutes in life; because those who say there isnt never live there life in accordance with that belief. i.e They establish absolutes to comfort themselves in certain situations and cry out for rights when hurt.

Wow! This subject was first posted awhile back. But bringing it up again doesn't hurt. I agree with Jimbo, that without being around people you love and respect and in turn they respect you, makes for a lonesome soul. It has been proven that being alone causes sickness. You need to communicate with the world. Love your neighbor as they say, and go around with a smile on your face instead of a frown. If you think bad thoughts, bad things usually happen. Go around thinking positive and give the first person you see a big smile....I guarantee it will make that persons day. There's nothing wrong with lot's of hugs, especially to children. Also, children love to see their parents exchange hugs and kisses, this gives them an inner peace knowing their Mom and Dad love each other. Sadly theres too many missing Dad's in this day and age, divorce is so easy. People should stay and try to work things out with each other and counseling, if that doesn't work, then head for the divorce court. But fighting during and after a divorce where children are involved is the most harmful thing you can do...just as staying together when two married people can't get along and fight all the time....that ruins a childs security and self worth. Morality is something everyone should practice. I am also sorry Steel-gray, that you are an atheist. I know theres a God and he has given me three chances at life when all the doctors said I should in reality be dead and my survival they said had nothng to do with them. I did however have prayers going all around the world on the web, in churchs, and in my heart I know that is why I am still here. Prayer is a powerful thing my friend. I hope that you never see the day that is your darkest, and you have nobody to talk to or raise your head to the heavens and say a prayer. So I will say one for you. God help steel-gray as he goes about life and heal his heart and open his mind. Amen.

I think that morality and ethics are what is needed to have a more peaceful inner and outer world. However, what people view as moral and ethical may differ but the bottom line is that they need to be what is not harmful to the self or others. If you make that into a question, you can determine if what is is moral or ethical. Even if someone doesn't believe in God and/or the Bible, it is a good guidepost.

Steelgrey---
I don't know just where to start so let us start with the very basic stuff. You are obviously an intelligent person who can count--1-2-3-4- and so on.
Being a human person you just naturally add and subtract as well. 1 plus 1 equal two and conversly two minus one equal one.
Sounds like I'm off out in left field with stuff that has nothing to do with morality.
Well, I'm not.
Why do you or anyone else count things?
Wouldn't you agree its because the things you count have sufficiant "VALUE" to make them worth keeping count of?
You didn't count how many times you blinked your eyes last week because knowing such has no practical value to you.
Morality has to do with SOCIAL VALUE, and the exercise of honest discipline has the same importance in figuring out moral problems as does it in figuring out mathmatical problems.
You as a human being have much in common with other human beings. You are a social being. You require social interaction with other human beings. Family, mate, friends and community are necessary to your health and happiness and you will die prematurly and miserable without them. When you understand such a notion, selfishness suddenly becomes a virture. Rational self intrest all of a sudden means that you strive to surround yourself with loving thoughtful folks in a network community of caring and cooperation that contributes to the well being, long life and happiness of all.
It's an impossible dream; however my friend, the journey is a wonderous adventure that often brings you into the presence of kindred souls whose comradrie in the contact and passing is reward beyond your wildest imaginings.

guess i'll start with happy holidays to all and a great new year! ^_^

well, on the point of my question...

just what is morality anyway? who's to say what's right or wrong? i've always felt it was all in our heads and all too opinionated... one person's "saving graces" can be another's torture. *shrug* i just want some insight on this because most of the time i'm just tossed aside for being immoral, i guess mostly because i'm atheist!

help?
