I went online and found Dr. Cooley, who indeed was a well-known heart specialist. He performed the first heart transplant in the United States. He also did have statistics on non blood-transfusion surgery for he included Jehovah's Witnesses among his patients. He did feel that blood transfusions were not necessary - IN HIS TYPE OF SURGERY - when special care was taken. Interesting the perspective we read words from - he was not saying others were sloppy - was only indicating the truly incredible precautions which had to be taken ... since his ground-breaking work was done in the 60's and 70's. It should be noted that his judgment was not always outstanding. The governors of the American College of Surgeons censured him for inappropriate use of a colleague's research and not getting proper approval for a procedure he performed. All of which is not to say Dr. Cooley is not an excellent source to quote - but that it is necessary to know the time, place and circumstances of his practice if we are to evaluate its appropriateness to this discussion.
