On this week, with George Stephanopoulos regarding hurricane Katrina, one year later:

When asked if Mike Brown, then FEMA director, was scapegoated, Powell, a representive of our president, said he didn't think it was productive to look back.

WHAT KIND OF ANSWER IS THAT????

And in regards to the billions of dollars in aid, Powell said "It's not unlike your checking account. When your wages are deposited in your checking account, the money is there. And you draw down on that checking account as you receive bills, and you have to pay those bills.

WHAT ARE THE PEOPLE OF NEW ORLEANS TO DO??? PAY FOR THE REBUILDING THEMSELVES, AND BILL THE GOVERNMENT? AND JUST WHERE ARE THEY TO GET THE UPFRONT MONEY IN THE FIRST PLACE????

Somehow, this type of logic escapes me.

But then, who am I??? I'm just another one of them bleeding heart liberals!!! Perhaps I need to think it over again, to see if it makes any sense!!! (sigh).

I agree, Jeri, it's heartbreaking. Our government has spent hundreds of billions of dollars on the Iraq war, killing and destroying yet those most in need in our own country continue to go without. I remember watching scenes from New Orleans, people dying on the streets while Bush continued fund raising and posing for a photo op playing a guitar.
Just read a clip this morning about how Al Gore chartered a couple of planes and rescued hospital patients after the hurricane. Paid for it himself, took no credit and shunned publicity while the resident in thief strummed away at a fund raiser.
I'd take a bleeding heart liberal like Gore over a heartless monster like Bush anytime.

What the H E double toothpicks????

And it wasn’t just cash that poured in. Other countries sent planeloads of tents, blankets, and Meals Ready to Eat, but the United States was ill-prepared to handle the largesse while residents were still trying to evacuate. Some offers were declined. But oftentimes the government accepted supplies like bandages, food, and cots and then allowed them to sit for months in Arkansas warehouses. According to a report by the Government Accountability Office (GAO) released in April, FEMA and the State Department paid tens of thousands of dollars in warehouse storage fees in the months after Katrina to house unused supplies from foreign countries.

Ahhh, Methinks the author found a solution???

Such news is unlikely to provide solace to the many foreign governments that cut checks, or, more important, to the Gulf Coast residents who are still in need of an actionable plan for rebuilding their lives. “I can’t believe [the money] is still sitting there,” says one foreign diplomatic official who worked on relief efforts in New Orleans shortly after Katrina. “Countries gave that money, wanting it to help people affected by the hurricane. It’s a shame.” A smarter approach, perhaps, would have been to bypass the federal government altogether. That’s what Qatar did in May when it granted $60 million directly to New Orleans universities, hospitals, and charities. With its portion of the cash, Children’s Hospital of New Orleans has already renovated two clinics and picked up the medical bills for hundreds of local children. Perhaps Gulf Coast residents should rid themselves of their reconstruction czar and appoint a reconstruction emir in his place

Thanks for this illuminating article, Egant!!!
