The NY Times' Saturday edition A French high school philosophy teacher and author who carried out a scathing attack against the Prophet Muhammad and Islam in a newspaper commentary says he has gone into hiding under police protection after receiving a series of death threats, including one disseminated on an online radical Islamist forum. The teacher, Robert Redeker, 52, wrote in the center-right daily Le Figaro 10 days ago that Muhammad was “a merciless warlord, a looter, a mass-murderer of Jews and a polygamist,” and called the Koran “a book of incredible violence.” The Redeker case is the latest manifestation in Europe of a mounting ideological battle that pits those who believe Islam and the Prophet Muhammad can be criticized in the name of free speech against those in the Muslim community who believe no criticism can be tolerated... ... “I can’t work, I can’t come and go and am obliged to hide,” Mr. Redeker told Europe 1 radio in a telephone interview from an undisclosed location on Friday. “So in some way, the Islamists have succeeded in punishing me on the territory of the republic as if I were guilty of a crime of opinion.” Mr. Redeker, who has kept in contact with news agencies by cellphone and e-mail, said that his wife and their children had also been threatened with death. He told Europe 1 that his wife was in hiding with him, but he was less clear about his three children, saying that one of them had been forced to move and that another was in a boarding school. Asked to describe the sort of threats he had received, Mr. Redeker replied, “You will never feel secure on this earth. One billion, three hundred thousand Muslims are ready to kill you.”

You say: "A teacher and author who carried out a scathing attack against the Prophet Muhammad and Islam." I have close personal friends who are muslim. They are not members of the radical right wing muslims who do wish ill upon all of westren culture. At the same time, I am not a member of the radical right wing christian Americans that wish nothing but hatred on all muslims. I really see no point to your posts and contribuitons to the political portion of this site. You hate all muslims. This is becoming very clear. And it will not be allowed at this site. Take it some place else. |

The point of this article is to educate. We must face the truth about radical Islam - it is on a Jihad march and no- all Muslims are not radical. This teacher may lose his life because he spoke ill of Muhammad not to mention he lost his freedom of speech. This post is not about your Muslim friends- I am not a member of the radical right wing Christian Americans that wish nothing but hatred on all Muslims- I;m not sure what that is, and -I don’t hate all Muslims and I don’t appreciate you lying on me saying I do. You don’t know what’s in my heart Tess - you don’t have a clue.

The point of this place is poetry. We do not need to discuss certain heated issues here. |

There was a time when the Spanish inquisition was in full force that many Christians who abhorred such behavior didn't dare speak out publicaly least they personaly experience the infameous rack. When Colombus came to North America and the Spanish conquestidores to South America the official policy of the colonial Christian religion was "convert or die". One could produce libraries filled with descriptions of the atrocities committed in the name of Christianity. The nearly monolithic power of the church was shattered into thousands of small protesting groups we call Protestants today. Chistrianity evolved into the relatively benign and loving religion we have today because decent loving folks were rejecting the evil of monolithic religious authority in droves. It came to be an article of faith that the only acceptable method of converting non-believers to the faith is by example and persuasion. I suspect that in a century or two the Islamic religion will have come to the same pass. Jimbo In the meantime---- Many commentators have noted the apparent irony: The Pope suggests Islam encourages violence—and Muslims riot in protest... Many commentators are missing the point: These protestors—and those who incite them—are not asking for mutual respect and equality. They are not saying: ‘It’s wrong to speak ill of a religion.’ They are saying: ‘It’s wrong to speak ill of our religion.’ They are not standing up for a principle. They are laying down the law. They are making it as clear as they can that they will not tolerate ‘infidels’ criticizing Muslims. They also are making it clear that infidels should expect criticism—and much worse—from Muslims. They are attempting nothing less than the establishment of a new world order in which the supremacy of what they call the Nation of Islam is acknowledged, and ‘unbelievers’ submit—or die.” —Clifford May
