Calls for Olmert to resign after nuclear gaffe · PM admits on TV that Israel has atomic weapons · Blow to longstanding policy of ambiguity Luke Harding in Berlin and Duncan Campbell Wednesday December 13, 2006 The Guardian Israel's prime minister, Ehud Olmert, was yesterday trying to fend off accusations of ineptitude and calls for his resignation after he accidentally acknowledged for the first time that Israel had nuclear weapons. After decades in which Israel has stuck to a doctrine of nuclear ambiguity, Mr Olmert let slip during an interview in Germany that Israel did indeed have weapons of mass destruction. > By not declaring itself to be nuclear-armed, Israel gets round a US ban on funding countries that proliferate weapons of mass destruction. It can thus enjoy more than $2bn (£1.02bn) a year in military and other aid from Washington.

How ya doing, Bubby, feeling better, I hope? Thanks for bumping up this thread, I’d forgotten I wanted to add a couple of points: During his Senate confirmation hearing on Tuesday, Gates mentioned why Iran might be seeking the means to build an atomic bomb: "They are surrounded by powers with nuclear weapons: Pakistan to their east, the Russians to the north, the Israelis to the west and us in the Persian Gulf," he said. This sanctioned reticence is a major irritant for Arabs and Iran, which see a double-standard in U.S. policy in the region. By not declaring itself to be nuclear armed, Israel also skirts a U.S. ban on funding countries that proliferate weapons of mass destruction. It can thus enjoy more than $2 billion in annual military and other aid from Washington.

Yes, Bubby, some people do need help, but they don't need nukes and we don't need to be giving them our tax dollars so they can develop them. I can think of far better uses for two billion dollars. As for being food in the lions' den, I'm sure the Palestinians know that feeling well, as do the people of Lebanon.

Synthesizing Security measures in Jordan: a New Narrative Paradigm of Israel's Nuclear Reactor "Dimona" Threats By: Dr. Ra’Ed QaQish, MP, Jordan Abstract Security measures programs by UN, the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and UNESCO need to expand nuclear imminent threats in Middle East through worldwide interventions to put pressure on Israel to dismantle its nuclear weapons for protecting the regional security and peace. Diminishing WMD integration by IAEA in isolation of Israel nuclear extensive access to information and advanced knowledge, undermined world efforts to empower and contribute to World peace and to advocates new trends in security measures. The study, suggests that unless a rapid intervention by the IAEA to move quickly to prevent a nuclear disaster in the region by the Dimona reactor a great danger for Jordanians is bound to transpire in the near future. Israel’s nuclear reactor proposes exclusion of physical world interventions and disrespects all world efforts towards security. Israel being the fifth nuclear power in the world rejects to sign the treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons, or to submit its nuclear facilities to international inspection. As for the waste products resulting from nuclear enrichment operations in Dimona reactor, independent reports by international NGOs revealed that Dimona reactor's waste products are buried in the areas east of the Al Bureij refugee camp and the town of Deir El Balah. They conclude that these waste products are buried as well as in areas near Jordan. Studies concerning Dimona reactor have revealed that the Israelis are aware of the possibility of a meltdown in Dimona reactor. Such a meltdown would affect an area reaching Cyprus and the entire neighbouring region. They also showed that radioactive substances are leaking from the Dimona reactor, perhaps explaining why rates of cancer have increased among nearby populations, like Tafila City in South Jordan. The study appeals to the world communities to extend help to the Arab region in general and to Jordan in particular to pressure Israel into dismantling its Dimona reactor. It stresses the fact that making the Middle East a zone free of weapons of mass destruction is the guarantee for the peace process in the region. Dimona Reactor… a Mystery Threatening the Middle East ................................................................................ .................................................................... International Press Center (IPC) The Israeli nuclear reactor of Dimona is vulnerable to meltdown, like the Russian reactor of Chernobyl two decades ago, which caused a humanitarian and ecological catastrophe. If Dimona melts down, it would affect an area 500 aerial kilometers in radius, reaching Cyprus and the entire neighboring region”, warned Dr. Yousef Abu Safiya, Head of the Palestinian Environment Quality Authority. A recent study conducted by the Jordanian authorities after a request from the Palestinian Environment Quality Authority revealed that the Israelis are aware of the possibility of a meltdown in Dimona reactor, which in turn would affect the whole region, mainly the Jordanian southern city of Tafila. The study also showed that radioactive substances are leaking from the Dimona reactor in a way that has increased rates of cancer diseases among nearby populations, particularly those of Tafila City. ................................................................................ ...................................................................... The Dimona reactor is 40 years old now, and the reactors of its kind usually lasts for 30 years, and many Israelis have demanded its closure for the increased risk it started to pose to the Israeli society and the entire region. On July 27, 2004 the Israeli government began distributing "Logol" iodine-containing pills to the people living around the reactor, in order to protect them from the radiation leaking from the worn-out reactor. Iraq was a party to the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (informally called the Non-Proliferation Treaty or NPT) and that Baghdad had complied with all IAEA guidelines. The Israeli nuclear facility at Dimona, it was pointed out, was not under IAEA safeguards, because Israel had not signed the NPT and had refused to open its facilities to UN inspections.
