sweet sorrow

“_memories_wrapped in the splendor of sunlight'
'a quietness left behind'
as separate tomorrows were stretched out before them
the “thoughts and dreams” left in her mind

were set to a musical score, like the movies
he - bogart to her lauren bacall
only the train whistle blowing departure
was lacking to finish it all

so gathering yesterdays into a satchel
stories as if from a book
they’d started together ~ no happily afters
still turning around ~ one last look

confirmed that there’d been something there that had vanished
but other things that ~ never would ~
so much in those last exchanged glances of silence
that both without words understood.
