Cowed

Just settle down. This can't last long
(though corkscrew lightning flares that cloud.)
Just listen to my night-herd song.

I hear that thunder - rumbling strong
growling, growing, getting loud.
Just settle down. This can't last long.

It's just a storm, and not much wrong.
We'll bunch together, ride 'er out.
Just listen to my night-herd song.

Just mill and low. I'll ride among
you - (range-beeves, unpolled, razor-browed.)
Just settle down. This can't last long.

That's right. Don't run. Just mill and throng.
You're doing great! You make me proud!
Just listen to my night-herd song.

This night began - I was still young
I'm praying now, with gray head bowed.
Just settle down. This can't last long.
Just listen to my night-herd song.

Beef cattle are usually dehorned - polled. My image here is of range cattle that have run wild. Maybe in Texas, when a lot of feral cattle were rounded up driven up to railheads in the 1870s. Cowboys actually did sing to cattle, trying to keep them calm.
