Deathwatch (A Villanelle)

All those things I should have said
(and things I meant at last to say) -
such empty words I found instead.

I kept a deathwatch by his bed
and wished that I knew how to pray
all those things I should have said.

The burdens of regret, the dread -
the love I wished I could convey.
Such empty words I found instead.

As minutes dragged and moments sped
the good-bye times all slipped away,
all the things I should have said.

I'd miss him so in years ahead . . .
I thanked him so for yesterday . . .
such empty words I found instead

I waited there, then he was dead
and all I'd found was dry cliché.
All those things I should have said -
such empty words I found instead.
