Get Rid Of The Advertisements

Ballad of a Southern Soldier

'I must leave
But I will return
Said Jack to his wife'
As they watched the fire slowly burn

'The invading North
Is coming fast
The South needs more men
Than it did in the past'

'Why must you leave
Why must you go
Jack, just know that
I love you so'

Six months later
Marianne got a letter
'The fighting has intensified
It will get no better

I'll try to make it back
As soon as I'm able'
Tears burned her eyes
As the letter hit the table

'Why did you leave
Why did you go
Jack, just know that
I love you so'

A few more months
Came and flew by
She received another letter
As the year's close drew nigh

'When I return
If you are not there
Between the rocks of the mantle
You'll find my beard's hair'

'Why did you leave
Why did you go
Jack, just know that
I love you so'

Fall came and went
In the Carolina Hills
She found hair and a letter
Amidst the wintry chill

'I fled from the fighting
It was just too harsh
I have to hide out now
In a cave; it's not far

If we never meet again
Before it's my time to go
Marianne, just know that
I LOVE YOU SO'
