The Secret Tree

As we push past the tall grass
In the heated shadows of the late afternoon
On our way to the secret tree
Where the sweat and magic of electric thorns
Pierce the silences between us
As we meet
When you pulled me close to you
As I pulled you through me
To the other side of the tall grass
Where the crackle of the hot sun
Glistened your skin to a glowing fire
Driving me insane
The way you move me
When our eyes met at last
Through eyelids closed
To savor the moment of oneness
And relish the wetness in the bristling leaves
Evaporating into nothingness
As a kiss is here but then is gone
Drifting upwards towards the heavens
Higher and higher to God himself
As he secretly watches
The way you move me
The floating of two clouds as they finally meet
In the grandest of blue skies
Magnificently covering the secret tree
As the shadows of jealous leaves
Cover two lovers
Caught up in a moment of power and instinct
As the outlined shape of the two clouds meet
Becoming one
Casting their cool relief on us
As we rest in union
Beyond the tall grass
Drifting off to sleep
Entwined in each other's dreams
As we push past the rowhouses
In the fog of the midnight sun
On our way to each other
Where the tingle and music of the soft parade
Stops me in my tracks at once
Listening to the song I've heard before
Long ago
But very recently
In a sun-filled field where clouds cast shadows
Next to secret trees
I stop and listen to the slow love song
As I look down to find
A lucky copper penny
Given by God to the sidewalk
A long time ago
But very recently
As it waited paitiently for me to find it
In the flowing fog of a summer's night
To make a wish of wishes
On our way to each other
A final destination
Somewhere up the sidewalk
As you run to me
And I jump through you
To the other side of the tall grass
In the cool fog of the neon sun
On our way to the secret tree
Where the sweat and magic of soul music
Pierce the silences between us
As we meet
And I'm overwhelmed by
The way you move me
When you pulled me close to you
As I pulled you through me
To the other side of the tall grass
In the brilliant dew of the earliest morning
On our way to the secret tree

For Etta, my lucky copper penny.

I'll meet you on the other side
of the tall grass next to the big tree.
