A Mouse Story

The shelter was old and weathered
Only three wall with one open side
The roof had holes to see stars at night
But for backpackers it was a delight

Stories were spilled out on the walls
Written in pen and sometimes blood
One such tale told of endless pain
About a mouse driving people insane

'I came to the shelter one night
After walking for sixteen miles straight
Next morning my snacks were open and tore
If I catch that mouse he will be no more'

'Kilroy was here and the mouse is too
I thought my food was tight
But he ate through my pack tonight
I hope he got a good snack'

'Fellow traveler watch out
There is a mouse that lives here too
He ate my pack straps to get the salt
My trip will now come to a halt'

'I came in hungry, thirsy and tired
And that mouse woke me up
Now I have to tell you that's a sin
But he wont wake anyone else up'

Our family slept very well
Thankful for the shelter and the sleep
Our packs were untouched after all
Still his story is remembered in scrawl
