When?

Tulips in the snow 02/28/07

Somewhere
between winter and summer
lies this no man's land
called Spring.

My expectations and anticipations
always seem
to jump ahead
of reality in Michigan,
and I've come to look
at the situation
like a child wanting to grow older
FASTER
but waking each morning
to the same
mirror image.

Ugh---It's almost April
and we
have not had a warm day yet.
Tonight's forecast
is for another couple inches of snow.
Oh, yes,
we do have a few brave tulips
sending shoots,
our first little bits of green.
I fear for these precocious harbingers,
these young sprouts.
Winter's still spanking the ground
and, in turn,
all the anxious bulbs
for not waiting patiently.

Mother Nature's not finished
with her boring lecture
on the perils of winter's cold.

Hmmmm...I was
that precocious child once,
but fear I've become
more like Mother Nature
than I care to admit to myself
or you!

Now, children,
stay in line
and
wait your turn!
