Pieces

Once my dreams shone like a crystal--
Many-faceted, sparkling, and clear,
Now they're broke in a million pieces
And they're scattered far and near.
Here and there along life's highways
Shiny fragments sometimes fall,
But there are so many pieces
I might never find them all.
At first I saved and cherished
Each small piece that I might find;
Safely tucked within my treasure box
With ever the whole in mind.
But time relentlessly passes
While I long for my perfect ball;
Oh! there are so many pieces
I shall never find them all.
I continue to trudge life's pathways
Seeking shards of each broken dream,
But my box doesn't grow much fuller
And the pieces no longer gleam.
I should have rejoiced in each fragment,
Rather than yearn for the whole,
'Cause there are so many pieces
I will never find them all.
When your dreams, my friend, are shattered
And in pieces on the ground
Just treasure each shard you recover
For the joy that can be found.
If you waste each day chasing glimmers,
Your pleasure in life will be small,
For there are so many pieces
You can never find them all.
