We Saw You

I saw you this morning
driving too fast.

I saw you this morning
driving so rudely
dashing in and out
around and around
with brake lights flashing.

I saw you this morning
driving too fast
frightening that gray-haired lady
running up so close on her bumper
that she may have worried that you would be
the cause of her early demise.

We saw you this morning
swerving
in and out,
out and in,
on the freeway
where you thought
you were master of All.

Really, it shows
you have no power
anywhere else in your life.

We saw you speeding faster
than the normal flow of traffic
in some imaginary haste
to get wherever it was
you were trying to be;
pounding your fist
gritting your teeth in anger.

I saw you, in my mind,
rising from your bed with this anger.
I saw in my mind
that you go through your life
threatening others.

I saw in my mind
that you push and dip
and swerve and hurl
and cram on the brakes
and jerk the steering wheel
and curse and shout
and pound the dashboard.

We all saw you.

You think you have Power.
You Have Nothing.

We all saw you and have no admiration
for the flash of spinning wheels
or the brightness of your paint and chrome.

We saw you
and shake our heads
and say a prayer
for your awakening.

We saw your grimaced face
flash by
and we each released our caught breath
when we knew you were gone.

Only to fight that little fear
to know you are up ahead.
We saw you hurl your car
around the smaller import
driven by the nice looking young man
with the baby seat in his car.

We saw you pass that young girl
way too close
and I saw her face tighten in fear.

We saw, in our minds,
that you have some erratic power trip
you play out with the instrument
with 4 wheels and the growling motor.

LATER

I saw you by the side of the road.
I saw you with your head in your hands
looking up with a surprised and lost look on your face.

I saw the look in your eyes
It held Hell there.

I am the woman
in a once pretty pink suit
lying in a twisted dead heap
with one new shoe missing
from my smeared life
engagement ring no longer shining
from my bloody knuckle.

And, all passers-by remembered:

We saw you this morning driving so rudely.
We saw you this morning driving so
We saw you this morning driving
We saw you this morning
We saw you this
I saw you.

We all saw you.
