Beloved Dragonfly

I carry me a dragonfly
In fists, tightly closed
With its soul
Shadowed,
Its wings
Slightly bedraggled,
Its body
Shamelessly disheveled
And its luminosity, long since exposed
I carry me my dragonfly
To comfort me
With all that’s familiar
And all that is old
Familiar,
Because it knows of my tears
And it sees my fears
As it takes me down
Down,
Down,
Down this long, long road
This road, of which, I have long known
Oh, dragonfly,
You are much too heavy
For these poor fragile hands
Why must I carry you
Wherever I go?
Why can't I just take me down
To the quiet river,
That flowing river,
Where I can breathe
Breathe,
As deeply as I can…
Open hands…
And let you go
