Struck by Lightening - A Backpack Story

We started on the Appalachian Trail that day
Met two men they were excited to say
They had just camped on top of a mountain
They were excited, bubbly as a fountain

They told of a site to wondrous to behold
Stars shining brightly the heavens unfold
The idea came and we wanted to see
Came to the mountain it was wondrous indeed

So we set up camp took care of our chores
Devin had to get water, who could ask for more
We walked to the top to see the sights
Much to our surprise we could see much light

A storm was coming it was plain to see
Went back to camp make it tight as could be
Put everything up and double tied the tents
No idea what a mountain storm meant

We crawled in the tents first, came the wind
Rain, lightening and thunder, we were pinned
The thunderstorm was on top of our mountain
We were in the storm and this is not fiction

Lightening made the tent look like day, then
It was not are we going to be hit but when
It hit Marvin first then it jumped to me
The lightening was so bright it was easy to see

The lightening was a continuous devise
The though came does it every hit twice
Thunder was loud, so loud that I cried
The rain I didn’t didn't notice, I was terrified

Marvin called the boys about ten feet away
Couldn't get an answer tho he hollered hey
He tried to go to them, the ground was electrified
He prayed they were alright to the Lord he cried

It finally got quite enough the boys were OK
Alan had been shocked real good but he was okay
Devin had been knocked out, had headaches awhile
Marvin limped for quite awhile, I just smiled

Soon the storm let up, we left all our stuff
And scrambled to the valley, it was rough
With only the wet clothes on our backs
We ran down the hill with not even a pack

In that valley we spent a long wet night
When morning came everyone was alright
We went back to get our stuff and such
It was amazing the camp was untouched

This is a story of God's care for a family of four
We should have all died in the great outdoors
There were several people killed that night
On the Appalachian Trail, but we were alright

Marvin, June, Devin and Alan Dennis
Tennessee/North Carolina, July 1980 - This is my version
After 29 days on the backpacking on Appalachian Trail, we took a weekend off. This event happened after we were back on the trail just 2 days. We made it back to our car in one day!
