The Promise
Ah! It was vacation time.
A boy and girl aged seven
Swam in a calm river
sun warming their exposed bodies
like ripples of happiness.
Help! Out of nowhere
thunder and lightening struck
to rush water from the mountains
in frenzied fury.
They swam with all their might
to safer ground with friend’s smiles
warming the little girl’s saved heart.
But the good looking little boy died
his frail, exhausted body found nearby
if only others had been there to help!
The little girl of seven made a promise
which she fulfilled and became a fine
swimmer and diver and worked with
a rescue team to save lives.
One sunny day , 14 years later
she went with companions to the sea
to visit an island and to their amazement
beside an upturned boat a boy
was floundering and screaming for help.
With strength and stamina she swam
and in the rescue hold returned with him
to the waiting arms of her companions.
A rescue~~a life was saved~~ a gesture of love
a promise made by the little girl was fulfilled.
This memorable event has rested
in my heart for so many years for you see
this little girl of seven was me!
