Honor and Respect

See this ragged old flag that I'm flying today
It saw action in old world war two
Where it journeyed with me to Omaha Beach
With my buddies, war tested, true blue!

It flew overhead mid the blood and the gore
Drooped low oer the hurt and the dead
When the war it was over, I brought it back home
In a foot locker, now neath my bed

The next trip it took was to old Vietnam
Where it flew mid rice patties and drugs
That time it came home with no glory attached
It was met with indifference and shrugs

Last month it came home from the last trip it took
For it went with my son to Iraq
Then it covered his coffin when they brought him home
At his funeral... the corp gave it back

Now, wet with my teardrops I'll undo it's folds
Gently smooth all the wrinkles away
With respect I will take it outside to it's pole
Yes! my ragged old flag flies today

It flies for the heroes... it was bought with their blood
Shed for freedom.. this life we enjoy
It will whisper to heaven all of their names
Fly to honor for each girl and each boy

It flies for the veterans...those that came back
Some living ... some under the clay
It flies to say thank you.. it flies in respect
For the part that you took in the fray

Old battle scarred flag... may so proudly you fly
Or this land of the brave and the free
For all those who serve her...I give thanks to God
For this wonderful gift you give me!

GOD BLESS AMERICA !
