Unguarded

Unguarded

I see them though you try to hide
their secrets, their darkened intrusion
and their intimate understanding of
your fear, and I see you know them well

they are the shadows, the darkness
in your eyes, the unguarded thoughts
crossing your mind, and the truth you
cannot deny... but wish not to see

lingering are unclaimed memories
clinging to what lies forgotten, lost
in unheard whispers falling from parted
lips, tumbling into their own silences

I see the doubt and torment of your
misguided reasoning and bitter tears
of lamentation and cruel uncertainty
you hide... just as you do the secrets

dreams longing to escape the chains
of hopelessness skirt along vision's
edge, afraid, so very afraid to break free,
to fly with random winds, so afraid to breathe

and you ask how I know, how do
I see what you think hidden, and why
do I not flinch when the darkness
comes, uninvited and consuming

look at me, beyond weary eyes
of my thin disguise, see me as I am,
my nakedness, the honesty of my
unguarded thoughts, look at me...

look beyond your shadows to see
that I too know them well
