Conversation With Dad

Dear Dad;

Can you hear me, I got a problem and I need your help!

Tell me;

What do I say to the little child leaning against my knee
How do I impart wisdom the way you did to me
How do I guide his footsteps safe through tomorrow land
What words can I use to show him the measure of a man?

Can I possibly paint a picture of a man , so strong and true
That his name is spoken with honor by everyone he knew
A man who faced his tomorrows, with the courage of today
Always kind and helpful to others he found along life's way

Can I teach him the time tested lesson, a man's word is as good as his bond
That a handshake seals a contract, no matter what it's written on
Can I show him that love is a blessing, like no other found on this earth
To hold dear his birthright and honor, never drag them through life's dirt

To work at a job till it's finished, to be loyal, honest and strong
And to keep a grip on his feelings ,no matter what goes wrong
To be proud of his flag and his country and to himself be true
In short ,what I guess what i'm asking ,is can I teach him to be like you?

Though your earthly form is gone now, the light of your life burns bright
Help me teach him to follow God's guideposts with the help of your heavenly light
Help me pass on the art of dreaming , having hope in the long dark night
And to value the power of praying and living a life that's right

Dear Dad, from your seat up in heaven,hear the humble prayer of the one
Who learned at your knee, life's lessons, that have helped me carry on
Please grant me the knowledge that I need to pass all of these things along
So the legacy can be carried from father to son to son.
