Seeing the Spectrum
Perhaps life might be easier
laid out in black and white,
but, when I weigh the pros and cons,
these colors blend tonight.
I see the world in many shades
and value ev'ry tone.
A human rainbow's what we are---
and not a simple clone.
At times, I see no right or wrong
but only hues of gray.
To understand opposing views,
there's circumstance to weigh.
I'm yellow in a red-lined world
where blue and green reside,
but here I stand defending all
when many would just hide.
Old age might be an obstacle
when youth seems fancy-free,
but I'll still keep my open mind
allowing gray to be.

Author's note: Some years ago during
a retreat, I participated in personality testing.
One test resulted in participants falling into
red, yellow, blue, or green categories.
My reference to a 'red-lined world' came
from my observation that power positions
often are held by red personalities while
blues and greens are people I've come
to admire for their spirit and unique input.
Yellows tend to work within the
rules and usually are people who have been
around for a while.
