THE BLUSH OF YOUTH

It’s been so many years now
since she’s seen the blush of youth;
and looking in the mirror
she must daily face that truth.

Wrinkles seemed to just appear
without warning or a choice.
And yesterday she noticed
a crackling in her voice.

Her eyesight once was perfect,
now she squints at all she sees,
and searches for her glasses
for without them she can’t read.

Oh, the trials of growing old,
no one warned her ‘bout this part;
but then she sees her children,
and it warms her aging heart.

Had she never left her youth,
she’d have missed so many joys,
she might not have her daughters,
she might never have her boys.

The world all worships youth,
but there’s so much more to life,
for youth is just a fleeting time
‘til we walk into the light.

For no one lives forever,
at least not here on earth,
she’s been traveling this highway
since the moment of her birth.

But someday she’ll be blessed
with heaven’s greatest gift,
eternal life surrounded by
her family and her friends.

She puts away the mirror
and bends her head in prayer,
to thank her Heavenly Father
for the blessings He has shared.
