The Mimosa Tree

Beneath the sweet mimosa tree
Edward had wooed his Rosemary
and promised her the moon.
Laughing, they sipped the crisp Chablis
amid the garden's potpourri
that dazzling afternoon.
Too soon the cherry blossom flies,
too soon the morning glory dies
and summer's days haste on.
The smoky scent of Autumn lies
across the land - to now disguise
the paths where love had shone.
Gnarled fingers twist the wedding band,
as icy winter grips the land
where once their love had grown.
Cobwebs cocoon her psyche and
all the dreams that they had planned
from memory have flown.
A crow returns her vacant stare
as she rocks gently in her chair,
a woman of great age.
Upon her lap his letters lie
and unfelt tears fall from her eye
to weep across the page.
