Get Rid Of The Advertisements

The Littlest Cowboy

I remember, son.

I remember when you were only two,
And announced
“I AM A MAN!”
How you carried your daddy’s lunchbox around,
Put one of his neckties around your neck,
Stood, as tall as you could,
And followed him around.

Yes, I remember.

I remember when you were only three,
And announced
“I AM A COWBOY!”
How you refused to wear anything
But your cowboy clothes,
Your “Buffalo Bill” cowboy hat,
Your little holster with the cap guns,
And spoke only in your gruffest “Buffalo Bill” voice,
Which wasn’t all that deep, goodness knows,
But with your little head held back,
As you walked around, like that.

I remember well.

I remember when you were only four,
And announced
“I AM AN EAGLE!”
And how you and your little friend
Would run through our front yard
Flapping your arms all around
And making loud
Screeching noises,
Making the neighbors grin,
As you would fall,
Wounded, to the ground.

How could I ever forget?

I remember when you announced
Emphatically,
“MY NAME IS NOT JOHNNY.
MY NAME IS JOHN!!!”
As you put
Away
All the toys that you loved,
And right before my very eyes,
You became a man.

And I watched you then,
When your son was first placed,
In your arms,
And I smiled at the dazed
Look on your face,
As you gazed upon
Your first born son.

And I smile right now, at how proud you seem
As that little boy follows you around.
And I wonder how long it will be
Before he ups and tells you,
“MY NAME IS NOT JIMMY.
MY NAME IS JIM.

Life is never easy, John
You’re mama couldn’t protect you
From all the twist and turns
That life handed out,
Nor all the heartaches and the hurts
That you have known.
But through it all,
I watched you persevere
And I was proud.

God bless the “gift of a child” that you once were.

God bless “the man” that you’ve become.

SO, GO RIDE ‘EM, COWBOY.
And I’m exhilarated,
While I am watching you,
As your time has come,
And my days are done.

You are flying like an eagle,
And I am smiling.

Smiling really big.

Always remember that,
My son.
