The Milkshake
She came out of nowhere…
She was moving away from the shadows, an apparition,
Radiating piercing screams from a shattered past.
It was like seasons, dancing, across time,
Trapping me there,
In the drive-through line.
And I couldn’t move,
Either forward,
OR backward.
Just trapped.
“Kind lady, can you give me your pennies?” she asked.
What can you say, when words alone are not enough?
I was penned in.
“No,” I replied, “But I’ll buy you something to eat,”
“Strawberry milkshake, please.”
“And I’ll meet you around on the other side.”
Huh?
Okay!!!
Then…
The lady, hidden within the speaker,
Started asking ALL THESE QUESTIONS.
“Large?” she asked, “Or regular?”
“Uhhh, large, I guess.”
“Whipped cream?”
“Umm, SURE.”
“Cherry on the top?”
And I was moved to say, “HELL YEAH, Why NOT?”
(By this time, I was feeling pretty good about myself.
Hey. There will always be stars, right?)
And she was there,
On the other side,
Just as she said she would be.
She took the strawberry milkshake, while blessing me.
Then, the next week, she appeared again,
Once more, out of the shadows.
This time, I was at the service station,
Pumping gas.
“Kind lady, will you give me your pennies?”
(I don’t think she recognized me).
“No, but I’ll buy you a strawberry milkshake,”
I replied.
“HOLD THE WHIPPED CREAM, PLEASE”
she said, sarcastically .
So I gave her my pennies.
And I watched, as she disappeared
Into the shadows…
Once again…
But Me?
I was still trapped.
There...within her shadows.
