surprise

clay sculpture
by walt larsen

I was going
away to
boarding
school,
and so I
came by
where my
father was
to say
goodbye,
knowing
that he
didn't care
for a fool
such as I.

I made
a wish
as got on
the bus
on Colfax
street,
and walked
to the back
to see him
fade away
into the
mists,
and I was
taken by
complete
surprise,
as I saw
that far
off look
within his
eyes of
blue,
and I then
knew
it too,
that he
really
cared
within a
strange
tormented
way
for his boy
going back
to school
a thousand
miles away,

We never
knew
each other,
'n never even
had a
brother
to feel
the pain
engrained
oh
sadly so
as I saw
him go
away,
this heart
betrayed
by absent
daddy.

I was
taken by
surprise,
as I saw
that far
off look
within
his eyes.
