Upward to Sleep

i was falling
through the mirror
in the library dark
within was green,
dark green,
and other.

met by a raven
in oily black
gimlet-eyed

was this a dream?

i wrestled with thoughts
attempting to wake
clawing at feathers
flying away.

i slipped on a cliff-edge
down into a cavern
black,
deep black
falling
away.

greetings sleeper
she said, with a purr
for she was a cat
unlike others seen
this cat was me-size
and she
was
green.

this one’s awake
she turned and said
me, in the line-up
pretended dead
where was i?
was this real?
or a dream i had?

up my spine crept fear
where was i?
what was this?
what lies beneath life
in slumber’s bliss?

i floated somewhere
i knew not where
i seemed in an ocean
grasping at fronds
avoiding creatures
that creep
drifting
thankfully
upward
to wakeful
sleep.
