Zeitgeist

It must have slipped in during the dark
Born from blackness and fed on night

The night of darkest hearts

In earlier times it was a shadow on a screen
A silver glint, a sliver of fantasy
In those days the mind of Western Man was immune
Its near innocence reflected away the fearsome one

But times had changed

With each fall from grace
With each rape of love
With each secret thought of our disgrace
With each envious eye
With each dishonest deed
It moved from screen to dream to heart

And came creeping down the decades seeking its chance

So it was it slipped through in the dark
It found its place
Inside each household in its dying light
Resting deep now within our aching hearts.
