The Dark Embrace of Night

It’s deepest night, all is still,
the moon creeps on your window sill
Everyone is fast asleep
as branches creak and insects creep
Within our minds the visions flow,
embracing places we'll never know.

All is still within the house,
as softly pads a tiny mouse
Now who is true owner here, him or you?
Or the owl who’s watching, too-wit-too-woo?
No one knows or cares it seems
for all are held by night’s sweet dreams.

Beyond the house, across the moor
the shadowfolk dance in rite impure
While soft grey mists waft to the skies
it’s best you avoid their dark surprise
As under warm blankets we sleep tight,
safely through this cocooned night.
