WISHES LOST

My wish was to work in a zoo
Herpetology was my goal
Reach in, pull a snake from his hole

Explore the mighty ocean blue
Discover a strange sea creature
A wildlife expert or teacher

To my dream, I could not stay true
I chose to serve country instead
On foreign lands, I had to tread

In strength of character, I grew
I set priorities in life
Perhaps one day, I’ll take a wife

Then my daughter made her debut
Those were the days, which made me proud
Into my life, came a dark cloud

Began drinking the devil’s brew
I almost lost all, at what cost
My soul, my essence was now lost

From life, wisdom I did accrue
I have new wishes and new dreams
In my head, I still hear their screams

I look at myself, who are you
The ravages of Alzheimer’s
No dreams, wishes, or reminders
