Dawning Of A New Day

Another gloomy day
with thunder rattling
already stormy
thoughts on my mind...
figures!

Sleep didn't allow
pretty painted pictures
or imagined romance
behind closed lids
so here I sit
half awake in a mood
much like the day...
unpredictable...

Cranky to the point
that even myself
ticks me off...
wishing I would just
go away somewhere
knowing right well
that no matter
where I went...
this hateful mood
would surely follow

Nothing could
make the day better
I was miserable...
tired...
'n disagreeable...
taking notice
even bathroom mirror
refused to wink...
not even a tiny smile...
yeah well, whatever!

The rain
made me want to crawl
back under the covers
but things needed to be done...
all I could hope for
is to go on my merry way
without delay
or interruptions
so maybe...
just maybe...
I could catch a nap
before dinner
ha!

Looking forward to days end
yet not anxious for nightfall
when shades would be drawn
only to find disposition
greeted by another
midnight concert
with little voices
serenading my
insomnia

The phone
starting ringing
off the hook
so I answered
only to hear
a sweet...
bubbling...
irritating voice...
that immediately
got under my skin

Good Morning, Mrs. Streeter!
'Your name has been drawn
as winner of an inground
pool with everything included,
congrat'

I cut her off...

Listen sweet cheeks,
there is no sunshine
in the forecast for the
next twenty some odd years
so I certainly don't need
a damn swimming pool'

With that
slammed the reciever
back into its cradle
mumbling to myself..
a swimming pool?...
give me a break...

Perhaps its a good
thing I have no live-ins
as my attitude
is enough to scare
bowzer...
the doberman next door
who just so happens
to be the meanest of mean...
that is...
until this morning...
my bark
bigger than his bite
oh well...
such is life...

I was just starting
routine breakfast
of bagel and cream cheese
when a little peek of sunshine
poked its head
through kitchen bay window
as if an invitation
to bask in its rays...
glaring back
not wanting to be bothered
I half-heartedly
accepted the invite

With cuppa in hand
face wearing an expression
that would frighten
godzilla
I sat right there
testing the sun light...
'come on, make my day'

As it started
warming the ugliness
of a sleepless night
I thought to myself,
such a waste of time
to be sitting here

Brightness reflected
off windowpanes
with a slight hint
of summer breeze
waltzing through the air
leaving gentle whispers
dangling on porch sills

The sky
shown shades of blue
with awesome colors
of a rainbow
weaved 'tween
cotton candy clouds...
eyes opened wide
to capture the sight
wondering...
'is there really
a pot of gold at its end'

As I watched from
my window...
squirrels froliced
'neath willow tree
her branches
kissing their foreheads
good morning

Butterflies fluttered
'round Mom's rose bush
minding me how much
she loved them
and lilacs too...
that very thought
tickled inner spirit
forcing corners of mouth
to curl up just abit

The babbling brook
had much to say
when neighborhood kids
thought it fun
to kick...
splash...
and skip rocks...
giggles leaping
from their throats
as tadpoles
scurried under water

In the meadow
were two morning doves
cooing soft melodies
while playing tag
with own shadows

Apple trees
dressed in green satin
wore full smiles
of bright red lipstick

I watched in awe
wondrous awakenings
bringing to light
things I had never
before witnessed...

but then...
I never sat here either...
never made the time
to take notice

Realizing
what a glorious day
was in store
I opened the window...
breathed in Mom's roses...
then tossed a big smile
into the mix

Feeling refreshed
'n ready to take
on the world
I went about my day...

Didn't even mind the company...
in fact, invited her along
