The Dragon

“Ahhh….home again at last”, the dragon screamed,
Thrashing and crashing through my mind.
Destroying dreams, smashing memories, and stealing sleep.
Gnawing and chewing on pieces of hope he finds.

Remnants of a path cobbled with hope,
Scattered throughout its length.
Once bright lights now shattered and broken,
Testament to its power and incredible strength.

Breath burning through doors once safely locked
The evil therein once understood, forgiven and stored.
Guilt, hate , and regret now free to join in its feast.
Yet again I dread the coming of night and morn.

At night he screams into my thoughts as my eyes close,
Laughing when they open wide with deep fear
Sometimes allowing sleep to come, then striking
With such ferocity I awake only my screams to hear.

Rest is unthinkable with his thrashing about,
Grinding every feeling he finds into dust.
Breaking and scattering everything good I found
Glaring and grinding with a look of pure lust.

Sitting upon the rubble of my shredded hopes,
He picks pieces of my dreams from between his teeth.
With a sharp edge of a broken wish for happiness
He belches my life, smiles and laughs cruelly at me.
.
Play now, cursed dragon , tout that pain you bring.
I have seen the world without you now..freed from hell;
I shall rebuild all the things your tantrum has wrecked.
Sit and gloat; for your hate I now know I can quell.

You shall not rule me again; play havoc with my hope.
I have a secret hidden that you cannot transcend
My strength will build while you rest there gloating;
When you wake, you will find yourself locked out again.
