They Never Knew

They Never Knew

It was not your smile or deep blue
eyes that caught my attention nor
was it those strands of hair that always

seemed to fall across your forehead
or the cleft in your chin that deepened
when you looked my way... Friends

said you were handsome, well-dressed,
clean-cut and tall, a 'real catch'
as they put it, but there was so much

they never knew, did not see, like
the way you touched my arm, telling me
you were near, or whispered my name

as though your next breath depended
on it... They did not hear your smile
or feel your eyes crinkle nor could

they taste promises, breathe of new
beginnings, upon parted lips or touch
love each time your warmth drifted

across my skin... No, they never knew
these things, never knew the 'you' that
caught my attention and let me 'see'

how sweet it could be... when love is blind.
