The End of Summer Blues

(photo of Lake Tahoe 2008)
Just for an instant,
One single stunning instant,
I’m eagerly eating
The last of the summer’s watermelons
And snacking on the last
Of the succulent black berries
Gracefully growing
On a wild summer’s vine
For just one sweet summer season
One wonderful summer’s season
I’m gratefully dancing,
Dancing in the sunshine
Loving it, in the summer’s sunshine
Holding onto it, and making it mine
In just one second,
One amazing single second
I’m eating the last
Of my melted ice cream
In my suddenly emptied spoon
And in just one fleeting moment
Just one swiftly fleeting moment
A beautiful summered morning
Turned itself
Into noon
Now, I’m seeing the sudden flurry
Of the ferocious
Winter’s fury
And oh, God
It just came
So soon,
So soon
So for now, I’m trading
All my brightest colors
For my darkest winter's clothing,
that smells suspiciously,
Of mildew’s
Mysterious musk
And now,
Now I’m just looking around
For an attitude adjustment,
And checking out
A new set of bifocals,
To change my focus
Now the summer's slowly ending,
And softly sighs
The evening breeze
But how dare they…
HOW DARE THEY?
Let it rain…
Let it rain…
In August?
