Oh Those summer Days

Now my old lady, she's fried some eggs
Fresh coffee brewed, the table laid
There's buttered toast and country ham
Looks like it's time to rise again

The cows are lowing, milkings due
The chickens they need feeding too
There's corn to shuck and hay to pitch
And the damned old tractor's in a ditch

There's the hogs to slop, new lambs to shear
This is my busy time of year
Gotta get the tractor, pick crops too
To pay these bills just now come due

But here I lay in this feather bed
While dreams of heaven fill my head
No work to do, play harps all day
If only I could get away

If I could rest these tired old bones
Those angel wings I'd sure put on
I'd take my chances, get away
But my old woman gotta have her way

I hear her knocking on the door
Tell by her voice she's getting sore
So sorry angels I can't play
There's just no way to leave today

Cause she'd only nag and pitch a fit
Till I get up and get on with it
So I'll give it all I got to give
Cause if I do she'll let me live

To work again another day
If in that bed I want to play
