Dedication to a Friend

As Summer’s slowly ending,
I’m reminded of a girl.
There’s no use in pretending,
friendship we gave a whirl.

So many years ago for me,
since her company I wanted.
Now as Autumn’s set to be,
with her memory I’m haunted.

I had a girl, she had a guy,
and in both cases far away.
We thought as friends perhaps we’d try,
surely that would be okay...

For two months we got on fine,
each other’s company enjoyed.
Then one night we crossed the line,
restrained hormones then deployed.

Our kiss was unexpected,
but stop, we had to try.
‘No more meeting!’ she elected,
it was a painful kiss goodbye...

When I thought about it later,
I knew she had been right.
Though in my life she left a crater,
that Summer was no longer bright.

In an instant we had changed,
from two friends who got on well.
Everything was re-arranged,
that kiss broke our magic spell.

Somewhere across the sea she went,
and I hope her life’s a thrill.
I loved the time with her I spent,
that kiss was such a bitter pill...
