The Singles Scene

She sits at the bar like a highchair
as the bartender serves her up a martini
Nervously she makes ringlets in her hair
preparing herself for any awkward meeting
She double checks, it's ok,
she brought protection
just in case
things get a little intimate

In the darkened room couples herd in pairs
kissing as though in a soup kitchen
slurping their long awaited feeding
Labors of love or dynamite
amid all the heaving
hitched to bells and whistles
......if she can just fit in

The atmosphere is teeming
with an attitude of Devil-May-Care
She hears and smells all the peeling
as they bump and grind out the meat
to mechanized music and cheap bands
making sandwiches
that'll never again
have enough filling

She's now a 'swinging single'
and this is one taste of freedom
She's feeling a little scared and tipsy
A slow dance is wht'd prefer for the leaning

Wait.....someone...he.....
Damn, just another inch
and she would've been in his vision

She'll tell ya' she's really not there
for the competition
She has no need for all the touchy feely
and could care less if she's invisible
She just wants to take in the scenery
and have a few laughs

She crosses her legs and he steals a glance
at the grand opening
of Saks Fifth Avenue, she thinks

Man, the ~heat.....
but she's out of the picture
It must be her lack of cleavage
She pulls down her brassiere
But she's freezing
Maybe if she had her belly button pierced
or a nose ring
she'd get his attention

She wonders whether
she should concoct her past
and at what point reveal her true feelings
She remembers the last test of her thick skin
...you're...you're leaving!!!
as she pulled up the sheets

Well don't get the wrong idea
After that emotional upheaval
she's the one doing the scan
She lures them in like Moby whales
and they come out like liiiitle teddy bears
Don't you think women hunt for a piece of tail?

Ok, so she's compromising her real needs
but it's after the after the after
upon which she is believing
You see, this is not really what it is
There are really angels and fairies
and princes and kings mingling
in transition to weddings and veils

There will be that enchanted evening.
