Nighttime Delivery
It came in a fine and shiny wrap,
with requisite golden bow, of course
It’s origin can’t be found on a map,
for it’s a special and magical source.
Delivery was made in the dark of night,
clandestine, never seen by a soul.
It sat there and gleamed as I turned on the light.
Quickly now, out of the bed I roll.
Who could have left such a glimmering prize
to greet me as I slowly awake?
It’s all I can see after rubbing my eyes,
I spring forth to give it a shake.
No tell tale rattle gives the contents away,
my guesswork is getting me nowhere
I don’t even know why I’ve been gifted today,
with this excitement I really don’t care.
It feels like Christmas morning, removing the bow,
slipping off the ribbon with shaking hands.
Telling my racing heart to simmer and whoa,
I must take the time this moment demands.
The shiny paper is securely creased and taped,
so I reach for my trusty penknife
Once the lid is opened these words escaped,
“Welcome to day one of the rest of your life”
Inside was the sun, to show me the way
and comfortable shoes to cradle my feet,
a measure of hope, a large dose of play
and a promise of love to make it complete.
