time

rollicking, romping, and cavorting
seconds, minutes, hours click right by
desperately I try to capture them
but my efforts they defy

time's mascots sneer continually
precious moments mired in a hypnotic trance
slipping and sliding right past me
in their exotic moonlight dance

my nose pressed to the window
I watch the scene undulate as it elapses
seconds at the head of the line
in the middle, an hour collapses

ashen with grief and dragging
a year brings up the sagging rear
suddenly a minute rushes to its rescue
tempting him with an amulet so dear

the talisman seems to have an effect
the year rallies and stands once again
knowing I must preserve it all for the future
i grab my trusty pad and pen

continuing to fascinate and enchant
moments and instants curtsy and bow
oh yes, I must capture them and keep them
but it's so complex, i'm not sure how

time can tell a tale
one perhaps we'd rather forget
but looking back i'd say
i've had more pleasure than regret

time you are so precious
more valuable than diamonds and gold
a treasure that seems so abundant at first
but grows scarce as I grow old.
