Forgotten Hero

Amongst long-forgotten ancestors,
was there fame, renown or glory?
How can we ever know it
if nobody writes the story?

In neglected spaces of my clan
a hero came to light,
a man but short in stature
and, perhaps, not very bright.

A public building was on fire,
there were people trapped up high.
This ancestor could have walked away
and left them there to die.

Somehow he found a ladder
but the ladder too, was short.
He didn't waste time thinking...
those folk were up there, caught.

Hoisting ladder to his shoulders,
he braced his chest up to the wall,
the ladder almost reached the window
and he prayed it would not fall.

Five people escaped the building,
down the ladder, down his back.
Their smiles said profuse thank yous
grinning out through faces black.

Recognition of his valour
came in due time from the king.
A certificate and purse of gold
for doing this marvellous thing.

The gold is gone, forgotten
but the scroll and purse are there...
a snippet from my family tree,
I thought I'd like to share.
