Tale Of The Riverboat Gambler

Well, he was a roving gambler
Who had lately come to town
And she was a painted lady
Known to all around

Way down there in New Orleans
Among the cypress trees
The gambler and the lady
Dame Fate awaited these

They met one night on Burbon St
Where the wild jazz music played
And there in wild abandonment
They danced the night away

It was a chance encounter
That quickly became more
Very soon the handsome gambler
Was a regular at her door

Each night was filled with love and lust
Of that there was no doubt
But one night as he left her house
The gambler's luck ran out

For she'd long been the sweetheart
Of a man called Smiling Jack
Who worked down on the riverboats
Had tattoos on his back

Alas, he caught the gambler
As he left tlhe ladies door
Then administered a beating
Like you never seen before

Now, the gambler trusted lady luck
To much to stay away
And what they did to poor old Jack
Is still talked about this day

The spanish lace with lacy frounds
Hung low among the trees
It formed a mighty hiding place
Where Jack could wait with ease

For Jack had long decided
To make him go away
He's have to take his great big knife
And the roving gambler slay

Lady fate favored the lady
She decided to step in
To gave to her the last hurrah
A way to let her win

Well Jack, he sat and waited
Altho the night was long
When he a awoke next morning
The lady she was gone

Yes the lady and the gambler
Left sometime in the night
As on a parting riverboat
Together they took flight

Now poor old Jack's the laughing stock
Of everyone he sees
He still looks for the gambler
His anger to appease

Still, he seeks the painted lady
A big knife in his hand
Each night down there on Burbon st
You'll see him make his stand

So my fine friends, don't you laugh at him
If your're down in your cups
For if you do, you're on your own
For he'll surely mess you up!
