Crying in the Shadows

A glint from the sun off his one good eye
could give his hidden position away.
The ogre, though powerful, was yet shy,
he dared not venture forth, day after day.

He remembers, too well, screams of disgust
caused by his hump and one drooping eye.
So keeping to shadows, he knows he must,
as the town folk and merchants pass by.

Deep in his chest beats a wonderful heart,
overflowing with love to give to no one.
Deformities have made him a man apart,
he’s so sure all the maidens would run.

The creatures of the forest help to provide,
bringing nuts and berries for him to eat.
But it’s other nourishment he needs inside
to make his wretched soul feel complete.

Alone at night, loneliness spells his defeat,
as he sobs silently in his cold bed of leaves.
Dwelling on the true love he’ll never meet,
slowly fading away as he openly grieves.
