NORTHFORK, VIRGINIA
Ashley`s name originated
from the Ash tree.
This tree is tough, straight
and elastic shade tree.
In 1609, Captain John Ashley
appears in Virginia.
More than two centuries
his descendants
were prominent in Norfolk, Virginia.
From this history is where
my imagination begins.
When the West was young,
from the East,
many folks traveled by wagon train.
They were tough and elastic
like the Ash tree.
Ashley could have been a tough,
straight shooting man.
He never backed down
as he took his stand.
Ashely could have been a tough,
elastic woman.
Like a shade tree,
she gave comfort to her man.
You think we are having
hard times today.
How would you like to go back
to just one day?
All the wagons are in a circle
and you are afraid of being shot.
The Indians are all around,
and in the desert, it is hot.
Your babies are crying
needing to eat.
Some of your friends
are dying at your feet.
I wonder, how many Ashleys
we have today.
What will it be like
if our freedom is taken away?
