Son of Thundercloud

The sky was clear and blue,
and not a cloud in sight.
The young colt had no clue,
of the danger or his plight.

He wandered from the herd,
wandered grazing all alone.
Far too young to be scared,
real fear he’d never known.

Half a mile from the others,
near some rocks he was walking,
Far from sisters and brothers,
unaware of something stalking.

The mountain lion caught the scent,
of the immature young horse.
Twixt large boulders he went,
very stealthily of course.

The stallion Thundercloud,
scented something in the air.
Then he looked among the crowd,
for his first colt, son and heir.

Thundercloud began to trot,
towards the rocky slope.
Backing of the herd he’d got,
he knew together they would cope.

Trot to gallop they then went,
clearly led by Thundercloud.
Round the herd the message sent,
the running hoofs were very loud.

In the rocks the lion closed,
the distance to the colt.
Inch by inch he slowly nosed,
he didn’t want this meal to bolt.

The colt’s nostrils sniffed the air,
and then he shook with fear.
He saw the lion crouching there,
and it seemed so very near.

The lion moved three steps and jumped,
to land on the horse’s back.
In his chest the colt’s heart thumped,
he must resist this attack.

The colt spun and started running,
this was no time to walk.
The mountain lion used his cunning,
in the prey his claws he’d lock.

The earth vibrated with the sound,
of two hundred hoofs then some.
As they raced across the ground,
they felt, we will overcome.

Fifty wild mustangs and,
a stallion racing fast.
Across the grassy plain they fanned,
the lion sensed the die was cast.

The lion dropped and retreated,
back between the rocks and sticks.
He sensed he’d be defeated,
by so many horses kicks.

The moral of the story,
for you if you’re a horse.
Don’t go for lonesome glory,
stick with the herd of course.
