The Honeydew Trail

When I met you, my darling, those years ago,
your eyes like the Honeydew gleamed.
Your smile warmed every corner of my heart.
You were all that I ever dreamed.

Together we climbed to the mountaintops,
or sailed life's tempestuous sea.
You satisfied all my wants and desires.
You meant all the world to me.

Somewhere along the Honeydew Trail
we took a wrong curve in the street.
Your smile lost its warmth, your eyes the sparkle,
sarcasm crept into your speech.

The King and the Queen of our castle grand
became like a saint and a shrew.
Briars grew up on the Honeydew Trail
and choked out the beautiful you.

Now your eyes sparkle with a devious scheme
as you read off your Honey-do list.
You always have headaches; there is no reward,
not even as much as a kiss.

My hair is all gray now, my stature is bent,
from years of slaving for you.
I'd trade every wrinkle I've acquired in this life
for a taste of the Honeydew.
