Your Child I Am

May the cry of my heart reach your ears, oh Lord,
and the shine of your smile light my path.
I'm ready to heed your every instruction.
Your obedient child I am.

So long have I wandered, desire my guide,
and though it ended in crushing despair,
I was lifted up from the miry clay,
discovering you always are there.

Like a child serving his father, I stand.
I wonder at your wisdom and strength.
I believe, beyond doubt, that my life is ordered.
I walk in your footsteps by faith.

Oh, to trust you more than gravity.
You hold my feet on solid ground.
I know your love is forever dependable.
Though sinking, I cannot drown.

From this moment on, You are my life.
I'm buried with Him in the likeness of death.
I'm resurrected to walk in newness of life.
My spirit, apart from the world is set.

Like your own child you're raising me.
I have a desire for nothing more.
I know that I'm in the very best care.
All that I am is totally yours.

A child is helpless, dependent, loyal, compliant,
rebellious, foolish, needy, teachable, helpful, frail,
trusting, loyal, moldable, assured, defers judgment,
accepting, grateful, content, and has faith.
God wants us to be childlike in some ways,
but not childish in every way.
